On May 18, 2012, “The Seminar on Best Practices for Free Admission of Museums” was held by State Administration of Cultural Heritage in Guangxi Museum of Nationalities. The list of best museums in terms of “2011 Best Practices for Free Admission of Museums” was announced at the seminar. Hunan Provincial Museum won the award “Best Museum in Innovative Management”. Liu Chun, vice-director of our museum took part in this seminar and delivered a keynote speech regarding the concepts and practices of the innovative management in free admission of our museum.
Free admission policy was officially adopted by our museum since March 20th, 2012. Since then, we have endeavored to implement the central government’s policy of benefiting the public with our cultural heritage and achieve maximum social benefits with public financial investment. We are committed to providing quality service to every audience. From 2008 to 2011, our museum witnesses a large number of audiences every year and receives positive responses from the public. In order to facilitate audiences’ understanding of museum, our museum provides free guiding tours of the Exhibition of Mangwangdui Han Tombs, which is the first of its kind in China. By the end of 2011, more than 140, 000 free guiding tours were provided to audiences. This not only can guarantee the order during visiting, but also can enhance audiences’ understanding of cultural heritage. This is a notable feature in our museum’s practices after the adoption of free admission policy.
Since March, 2012, our museum started to prepare for bidding the awards in terms of best practices of museum after the adoption of free admission policy. This was in line with the activity organized by State Administration of Cultural Heritage. Our museum was chosen as candidates in the following five awards: “Best museum in Display and Promotion”, “Best Museum in Website Service”, “Best Museum in Innovative Management”, “Best Museum in Developing Cultural Products” and “Best Museum in Social Involvement”. It was the only museum which could be chosen as candidates for so many awards. The list of best museums was announced at Nanning, the host city for celebrating May 18th International Museum Day in China. With a panel of 15 judges, 10 museums were finally chosen and awarded in their respective practices. Hunan Provincial Museum was award the “Best Museum in Innovative Management”.
