The special exhibition of trans-cultural interactions between China and Italy launched in the Hunan Museum

Another special exhibition after the reopening of the Hunan Museum was launched on January 26th at the Art Hall of the museum. The exhibition-Finding A Homeland at the End of the World – The Trans-Cultural Exchanges and Interactions Between China and Italy From the 13th Century to the 16th Century was finally presented to the public after two-years’preparation. 

This trans-cultural exhibition presents a stunning array of over 250 artifacts and items from 48 museums and cultural institutions from China, Italy and the United States. With a trans-cultural perspective, the exhibition aims to tell a continuous story of art communication between Italy and China during the 14th to the 16th century by integrating important collections and resources in China and Italy. This exhibition is dedicated to reflect the latest research achievement of Sino-Italy cultural exchanges during the Renaissance in recent two decades.

The exhibition consists of five parts “From four seas to seven seas”, “The Compass Pointing to the East”, “The Sunrise of Dadu”, “The Package of Marco Polo” and “It’s impolite not to reciprocate”. 

More than 300 people attended the opening ceremony, including leaders, experts and media representatives from Hunan Provincial Department of Culture, Hunan Provincial Bureau of Cultural Heritage, School of Humanities of Central Academy of Fine Arts as well as nearly 50 cultural institutions at home and abroad. Chen Xuliang, deputy director of the Hunan Museum hosted the ceremony. Duan Xiaoming, director of the Hunan Museum, Li Jun, chief curator &deputy dean of School of Humanities of Central Academy of Fine Arts, and Andrea Bellini, director of Museo Correr of Venice made important addresses.

Duan Xiaoming stated in his speech that the “China-Italy ”Exhibition gathered more than 250 artworks from nearly 50 museums worldwide, including goddess sculpture of Rome, Pompeii mural, original testament script of Marco Polo and others, which highlighted exchanges and communications between China and foreign countries.

As was noted by Li Jun, the link between China and Rome can date back to as early as two thousand years ago, when both regarded the other as the place where Sun rises and sets. Hence after, especially between 13th -16th century, frequent and close interactions between the East and the West gave birth to many magnificent artworks, which are displayed in the exhibition.

Tickets: For Adults, 30 Yuan per person

             For students, 15 Yuan per person 

Open hours: From Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00—17:00 (last entry at 16:00); the museum is closed on Mondays (except statutory holidays) and on Chinese Lunar New Year’s Eve.
