AAM’s Professional Books Now Published in Chinese
With many outstanding museums around the world, the United States has made a lot of active explorations in museum management and thus has rich experiences and practices which are of great value to Chinese museum professionals. To this regard, Hunan Provincial Museum reached an agreement with the American Alliance of Museums (AAM, formerly the American Association of Museums) and Chinese Museums Association (CMA) in 2010 to translate and publish AAM’s series books on museum management in China.
The Museology Institute of Hunan Provincial Museum selected 10 books from the AAM and integrated those 10 books into 7 separate books which have been successively published in both Chinese and English in past four years.
The series books cover extensive aspects of museums including the themes of standards and accreditation, institution planning, ethical standard, collection planning and caring, education and visitor services etc.
Here is the book list:
1, National Standards & Best Practices for U.S. Museums
2, Accreditation Resources Kit
3, Secrets of Institution Planning
4, Education and Learning in Museums
5, The AAM Guide to Collections: Planning and Caring
6, Museum Visitor Services Manual
7, Unbound by Place or Time: Museums and Online Learning
Apart from those above, Hunan Provincial Museum together with Yilin Press has by now translated and published Museum Origins: Readings in Early Museum History and Philosophy as well as Museums in Motion: an Introduction to the History and Functions of Museums (the second edition). In the next few years, the two will further enhance their cooperation and bring in many other excellent museum books. It is hoped that the endeavor of Hunan Provincial Museum and the Press will bring some insights and references to museums in China.
