Hunan Museum signed a cooperation plan with the British Museum

“Hunan Culture and Tourism Promotion Conference—Splendid Xiaoxiang ” co-organized by  the Hunan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism as well as China National Culture and Tourism Office in London kicked off in London on March 28th, 2019(local time). 

More than 100 distinguished guests attended the activity, including Xu Dazhe, governor of Hunan Province;Chen Wen, Minister of Chinese Embassy in Britain;Yu Fan, Minister Counselor of Chinese Embassy in Britain and Sally Backcomb, executive director of  Britain's national tourism agency etc. 

Xu Dazhe stated that with profound history and abundant cultural resources, “Splendid Xiaoxiang” is gaining global reputation. He expressed his hope that this conference would act as a bridge between China and Britain, further promoting the cooperation in culture and tourism between the two countries.

During the conference, Duan Xiaoming, director of Hunan Museum and Najia Race, director of International Engagement Department of the British Museum signed an agreement, planning to co-organize an exhibition “An Age of Luxury: the Assyrians to Alexander” in 2021.

Orlando Edwards, director of Bureau of East Asian and American Affairs of British Council,said that the year 2019 marked the 40th birthday of British Council, which would continue to enhance the communication and cooperation between Hunan Museum and the British Museum in an all-round way.

Established in 1753, the British Museum boasting over 8 million pieces of collections is one of the biggest and most well-known museums in the world. In 2017, exhibition “A History of the World in 100 objects” organized by the British Museum in National Museum of China and Shanghai Museum attracted nearly 640 thousand visitors. At the same time, Chinese people also rank the No.1 in number among visitors of the British Museum.

Hunan Museum received over 3.6 million visitors in 2018. Some constantly updated special exhibitions about ancient civilizations around the world had been a great appeal to the public. And the exhibition to be held in 2021 will provide another platform for Chinese people to know more about world civilization, accelerating the cultural exchange and cooperation between China and Britain. 

During his visit in Britain, Duan Xiaoming also paid a visit to the School of Museum Studies in the University of Leicester, meeting with Dr. Janet Marstine,vice director of the school of Museum Studies,hoping to introduce their training projects to Hunan Museum.
