In 2008, China started gradually opening the doors on 2,400 museums that offer free admission to the public. By 2011, a budget of 8.2 billion yuan (US$1.29 billion) had been spent on the initiative, revealed Song Xinchao, deputy director-general of State Administration of Cultural Heritage and president of the Chinese Museum Association, at an academic meeting on Friday.

The free museums are attracting 520 million visitors annually, Song pointed out, but they need to improve their capability in public education.

China now has 3,415 museums, and the free-admission policy has credited with winning international appreciation for its role in showcasing China's historic and cultural diversity to the public, said UNESCO cultural heritage protection specialist Du Xiaofan.

Free admission is a trend gaining momentum in the global museum industry, and is proving a boon to cultural exchanges and cross-cultural understanding.
