On September 29th, 2015, the education center of Hunan Provincial Museum held an activity of “bring bronze culture into campus” in Huidong Primary School, Changsha, to accompany the exhibition “Masterpieces in Hunan: Bronzes of Shang and Western Zhou Dynasties unearthed in Hunan Province”.

The activity mainly consists of two parts: “little conservator” experience lesson and a lecture on bronze wares. Under the guidance of educational staff, kids experienced a “little conservator” lesson. Firstly, the educational staff sketched out elementary knowledge of bronzes, and then explained part of works of the exhibition with both excellent pictures and illustrations. After that the educators introduced the principles, main procedures and methods of the restoration of the bronze ware, kids also practiced how to restore the replica of the Bronze Ding with Human Mask Design from the Shang Dynasty. Secondly, during the guided tour, kids designed “paper magic cube” with bronze ware arts; kids made several pieces of working sheets into four different magic cubes with the patterns of bronze wares.

In the Donghui campus, the museum volunteers introduced important bronze wares in the exhibition, with a focus on the functions, decorations and other related knowledge of bronzes. Children then asked a lot of questions with great enthusiasm. The volunteers’ interpretation was greeted with a storm of applause.

The activity of “bring bronze into campus” will be held in several schools, aiming to enhance cooperation between museum and school. The activities are held to make children get better acquainted with bronze culture, improving their practical ability and art creativity. These students can feel the charm of the bronze culture and the cultural influence of the museum without walking outside of their schools.
