Getting to Know the Masters Family Day Activity Held in Hunan Provincial Museum

In line with the special exhibition UNE AVANT-GARDE EUROPEENNE: the appreciation of the 20th century collections from Unterlinden Museum, the Education Center of Hunan Provincial Museum designed the family day activity series on the theme of “Getting to Know the Masters”. The purpose of the series is to enhance children’s understanding of French culture and get to know the European art. The first activity of the series was held on October 25, 2014 successfully, with the participation of 20 family groups.

Yang Yang, dean of the department of French, Hunan Normal University, was invited to introduce the art, architecture, food, education and other aspects of France so that those family groups would enjoy the unique charm of French culture.

Then, the educator of Hunan Provincial Museum selected some masterpieces, which were easy for children to understand, and explained the shape, color as well as other artistic elements in those works. The Desperate Young Man, the sculpture created by Rodin, was illustrated. In addition, its material, artistic style, its creator – Rodin and other masterpieces of Rodin were explained in detail so that children could get to know something about Rodin and the certain features his sculptures.

The final section was the interactive activity, in which children created their own “sculptures” by using paper materials with the help of their parents. With great effort and interest, the family groups made various kinds of shapes, such as the skyscraper and the animal.

Children enjoyed themselves very much during the creation of their own works and they loved their works very much. Their parents spoke highly of this activity as children were able to get to know the art masters in such a unique and interesting way.
