Hunan Provincial Museum, in active cooperation with Changsha Tian Jiabing Experiment Middle School, launched a theme-based teaching program and activity for the History Association among the first grade students in this high school, which was an important part in the practice of the project entitled “Research on the Application of Museum Resources in the Development of Students’ All-round Abilities”. “Suyuan History Association” was newly founded at the beginning of 2012 after a lot of preparation work. “Suyuan” means “to delve into history and to trace the roots” in Chinese. This association boasted about one hundred members, who showed great passion for history and archeology.

At 16:00 on March 2nd, under the guidance of the museum’s educator, about eighty students from the History Association of Tian Jiabing Experiment Middle School paid their first visits to the burial site of Mawangdui Han Tomb No. 3. They marveled at the huge pit after entering the burial site. After that, Kang Jie, the museum’s educator, gave a comprehensive interpretation on the excavation, the occupant of the tomb and many funeral objects, which deepened students’ understanding of this tomb and its history. This one-hour visit to the burial site ended, but students were eager to know more and raised many questions about Mawangdui Han Tombs to the educator while standing outside in the cold air.

This visit was a great success and it served as a prelude to more activities of the History Association of this middle school. In the next phase, Hunan Provincial Museum will cooperate with nine primary and middle schools (including Tian Jiabing Experiment Middle School) and launch a series of colorful association-based activities, aiming at developing young students’ all-round abilities (independent learning ability, cooperative researching ability, etc) through site visits, hands-on practice and so on.
