After the ceremony, Zou introduced personally about 40 works among his donation for the visitors. Xu Yousheng, member of the Standing Committee and Minister of the Publicity Department of CPC Hunan Provincial Party committee spoke highly not only of the great painting skills of Zou Chuan’ an, but also of his great spirit. He said: “The paintings by Mr. Zou are very excellent. Moreover, he is a good person whom we should admire and learn from in terms of his artistic achievement as well as his virtues”.
Zou Chuan’ an donated a total of 799 works, including paintings, sketches, calligraphy, manuscripts and so on. There were 38 pieces of Gongbi (fine brushwork) paintings. The works were created over the past five decades, reflecting the entire creation path taken by Zou. The content of his works were very diverse, such as flower-and-bird paintings, calligraphy and sketches. One of his works was entitled “Dream with the Lapping of the Waves”, with the length of 184 cm and width of 95cm. It was the largest painting among the donated works. The waves and running water were wonderfully represented by Zou, demonstrating his great painting talents. Another piece of painting was entitled “Sound of the Nature”. Although the size was small, it was of great artistic value as the rendering of sky and the water surface created the awesome effect with the perfect integration of the light and the shadow. A mysterious atmosphere was created. A pair of black swans was represented as frolicking with each other, bringing about tremendous vitality into this painting. These works were of great artistic value. Therefore, they were great treasures from which the future flower-and-bird painters can learn and study.
Hunan Provincial Museum attaches equal importance to “Collection and Exhibition” and has been committed to the protection, research and promotion of the fine cultural heritage of Hunan. Systemic and professional protection had been conducted by the museum regarding all of the works donated. Detailed archives of the works were documented. Tailored packaging materials were prepared. The collection of the works by Zou was of great significance to the following aspects: the enhancement of the collections of art in this museum, inheritance and development of Chinese paintings, and the study and display of the innovations of Chinese paintings during various historical periods.
