The fast development of digital technology has provided great impetus for the creative industry. The first comprehensive art center specializing in digital arts in Beijing, CMoDA, was unveiled at the Millennium Monument last Saturday. Our reporter Yang Ran interprets the gallery with its opening multi-media exhibition.

A staggering audiovisual collaboration of monolithic proportions between Mexican electronic composer Murcof and visual artist Simon Geilfus’s realtime panoramic projections opened CMoDA’s debut season of Creative Future.

With shape-changing shadows casting on a semi-transparent screen, and to the music of fluctuating rhythms, the audience members are led into an avatar-like world.

The multimedia exhibition is an interactive adventure. This piece is inspired by the Icelandic volcano, which wreaked travel havoc across Europe in April 2010. Painted directly onto a wall, the wireframed scenery is slowly revealed by gentle light effects.

"Baroque Topologies" transformed two iconic paintings from the Baroque Era into digital fabrications through the use of custom software.

"Augmented Shadow" is a design experiment producing an artificial shadow effect through the use of tangible objects, blocks, on a displayable tabletop interface.

And by sticking post-it notes on a surface, people create a musical piece and mix animations. The color of a post-it defines the type of instrument, and its vertical position controls the pitch of the note.

The 10 installations from both Chinese artists and international organization "onedotzero" explore the evolution of interactive, immersive and avatar-like experiences from the aspects of light, strata movement, volcanoes, origin of human beings, tribes, societies, cities and the globe, between virtuality and reality.

Onedotzero is an international moving image and digital art and design organization that commissions, showcases and promotes innovation across all aspects of moving image, digital and interactive arts. The organization, founded in 1996, is known for representing a diverse array of artistic endeavor via the annual onedotzero_adventures in motion festival and associated touring.

CMoDA is striving to build an interactive, creative and experiential platform for Chinese creative industry professionals and the public.

The cooperative opening season of CMoDA includes a series of programs under the title of AV@AR, featuring exhibition, film screenings, lectures and workshops. It will run until January 3rd, 2012.
