ermilion Floss-Padded Gown

Western Han Dynasty (207B.C.- 25A.D.)

Gown Length: 140cm; Total Length of the Sleeves: 245cm; Cuff Width: 25cm; Waist Width: 52cm

Unearthed from M1 at Mawangdui, Changsha in 1992

This gown has a crossed collar and a flap extending diagonally from the chest to the armpit in the shape of a triangle. The vermilion silk gown is lined and hemmed with yellow gauze and padded with silk floss. The red dye mainly contains mercuric sulphide, also called cinnabar. Finely and evenly dyed, the gauze’s pores appear very clear, not blocked. It reflects a rather high level in making dyes, such as mercuric sulphide, and in dyeing techniques.
