A towering and sturdy pine tree stands in the rugged rocks and two deer sitting back to back enjoy their leisure time on the grass: the one with horns gazing into the distance while the other one looking up in the sky. Around the rocks are orchids and other herbs. The artist has combined real foreground objects with virtual background scenery to create a very vivid scene.
The painting has an inscription of “Zhen Shang” carved in relief on a seal. In addition, the painting bears at the left top, an inscription of a poem affixed with the inscription of “Bada Shanren” carved in intaglio on a rectangular seal and “He Yuan” carved in relief also on a rectangular seal.

Bada Shanren
Bada Shanren was none other than Zhu Da, with original given name Tongluan and many literary names. A native of Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province, he was a descendent of Lord Ning (Zhu Quan) in the Ming dynasty. He was good at painting. His paintings of landscape, flowers and birds take on a distinctive style of bitter irony.
