Our Asia:Ancient Asian Civilizations Exhibition

The exhibition is held by the Hunan Museum with the support of the China Cultral relics Exhcange Center and aims to give visitors a glimpse of the diverse cultural charms of Asian countries and to witness the long-lasting legacy of the spirit of exchange and communication along the ancient Silk Road. The exhibition is on display from now until October 8, 2021 in the No.2 Special Exhibition Hall on the first floor of the Hunan Museum.

The exhibition takes historical time as its context, and through more than 220 pieces or sets of exhibits , the history of Asia for more than 10,000 years, is divided into two major historical phases, pre-Hellenistic Asia and post-Hellenistic Asia, with Alexander the Great's Eastern Expedition and Hellenization as the dividing line. The exhibits are grouped together by region and content, allowing visitors to understand the origins and development of Asian civilizations, and to experience the exchange, collision and fusion of thousands of years of East and West civilizations across Asia.

The exhibition reflects the unparalleled vitality and creativity of ancient and diverse Asian civilizations through active and continuous exchange through three sections: 'The Emergence of Diversified Civilizations', 'The Meeting of East and West and the Development of Civilizations', and 'The Light of Wisdom and Ideas'.

Red Spirit Flourished in the Land of Heroes: Exhibition of Revolutionary Cultural Relics collected in the Hunan Museum

Hunan Province boasts its abundance of red revolutionary cultural resources, so much so that it seems to be a revolutionary history museum without walls. In September 2020, general secretary Xi Jinping inspected Hunan and praised the province, saying that "one can find revolutionary site in nearly every 10 steps", "soaked in the blood of the Red Army, the soil witnessed the revolutionary martyrs’ heroic sacrifice". The year of 2021 marks the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China. To celebrate the centenary of the founding of the CPC, the Hunan Museum launches the original exhibition, namely Red Spirit Flourished in the Land of Heroes: Special Exhibition of Revolutionary Cultural Relics collected in the Hunan Museum. This exhibition follows the history of the revolution of the CPC in Hunan. To educate, impress, and inspire more people, we dig into stories behind the cultural objects to better interpret the cultural connotation and the value of the times embodied in the cultural relics while showcasing the revolutionary spirit and noble characters of people with lofty ideals in four units, namely "The Tide Riders Surf the Currents", "A Million Workers and Peasants Rise Up", "All Around Heroes Home-bound in the Evening Mist" and "Bitter Sacrifice Strengthens Bold Resolve".

The Artworks of the Wang School: Wang kaiyun and his disciples

Wang Kaiyun (1833-1916), styled himself Renqiu and Renfu, was born in Xiangtan, Hunan Province. Wang Kaiyun passed the imperial exams at the provincial level during the reign of Xianfeng Emperor and once worked for Su shun and Zeng Guofan. Later, he gave lessons at Zunjing Academy in Chengdu. He successively served as the head of Sixian Academy in Changsha and Chuanshan Academy in Hengzhou. He hosted Nanchang higher school and later gave lessons in Xiangqi building. In the Qing Dynasty, he was appointed as the post of Jiantao in Imperial Academy and later was promoted to the post of Jiangxian. In the early Republic of China period, he was the director of the Museum of Qing Dynasty History, and a part-time member of the Senate. With the writings of Xiangqilou poetry book, essays and diaries, he has made great achievements in many fields such as Confucian classics, literature, history, education, calligraphy and so on.

Wang Kaiyun, a famous scholar in Hunan, with friends and disciples all over the world, was known as the leading scholar of the times. He strongly advocated to put  the classics into practice, and cultivated many outstanding students studying real problems, such as Yang Du, Yang Zhuang, Yang Jun, Xia Shoutian, Qi Baishi, Bazhi Toutuo, Song Yuren, Yang Rui, Liao Ping, Hu Yuanyi, Yi Shunding, Liu Kuiyi, Ma Zonghuo, etc. To express the gratitude and nostalgia to his teacher, Qi Baishi once wrote a poem: “I often recall the past and miss my beloved teachers and old friends, but the past is gone forever. ” In the modern history of China, there are many achievements made by Wang's disciples. Many talents in Hunan Province of modern times and the revival of Bashu culture are inseparable from Wang Kaiyun's elaborate cultivation.

The Hunan Museum has a rich collection of letters, paintings and calligraphy of celebrities in Hunan Province since the Ming and Qing Dynasties, and the museum carefully selected more than 100 pieces (sets) from the works of Wang Kaiyun and his disciples for display, including calligraphy, painting, seals, diaries, manuscripts, letters and so on, most of which are shown in the first time. Those precious exhibitions not only have important literary and historical value, but also embody the aesthetic value of scholars, which can be called as a feast of academic exchange and art appreciation. It is hoped that through this exhibition, we can go through the time tunnel to read the stories of Wang’s school and learn Wang Kaiyun’ s and his disciples’ achievements embodying the philosophy of taking the rise and fall of society as their responsibility and studying real problems, and sort out the unique cultural heritage system of Hunan Province in the late Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China period, so as to further promote the study of Huxiang culture in academic and art circles.

Exhibition of Taoyuan Woodcarvings

The Exhibition of Taoyuan woodcarvings is an original special exhibition focusing on the local culture of Hunan Province hosted by the Hunan Museum. With over 200 pieces (sets) of fine woodcarvings from private and public collections, the exhibition presented the concave-convex art of woodcarving to visitors through the visual display of the technical characteristics, artistic style, and function of woodcarving. Taoyuan woodcarving, with its fresh vitality, rich flavor of life, unique etiquette and symbolic significance, reflects the aesthetic appeal, spiritual belief and personality traits of the people in this area. It not only inherits the essence of Chinese traditional culture, but also adds wonderful local characteristics to the cultural patterns of pluralistic integration, enriching the Chinese civilization of harmonious coexistence with difference, and highlighting the crystallization of the collective wisdom and cultural confidence of Taoyuan people. Let's start with Taoyuan woodcarving, tell the story of Taoyuan featuring a long history, cultural prosperity and simple folk customs and observe the spiritual pursuit, hard work and ingenuity of the people in Hunan in the process of creating a better life.

我们亚洲——亚细亚古代文明展

本展览由湖南省博物馆举办,得到了中国文物交流中心的支持,是集中展示古老多元、交流互鉴的亚洲文明的特色展览。

展览汇聚了来自叙利亚、黎巴嫩、巴基斯坦、柬埔寨、日本、斯里兰卡和中国等七国,涉及到亚洲十国的220余件(套)珍贵文物,直观呈现出文明兴起阶段亚洲文明多元共生的特征,文明发展阶段亚洲各地东西交汇、商贸物质交流的盛况,及文明传播阶段亚洲的宗教哲学思想流变。整个展览,以文物讲述历史,展现各文明之间对话、交流、互鉴的成果,展示亚洲文明的风采与魅力,体现“美美与共、各美其美”的亚洲文化。

芳草之地 红满潇湘——馆藏革命文物专题展

湖南红色革命文化资源极为丰富,三湘大地宛若一座没有围墙的革命历史博物馆。2020年9月,习近平总书记考察湖南,赞誉湖南“十步之内,必有芳草”“寸土千滴红军血,一步一尊英雄躯”。2021年是中国共产党成立100周年,为庆祝中国共产党百年华诞,湖南省博物馆特别举办大型原创展览“芳草之地 红满潇湘——湖南省博物馆馆藏革命文物专题展”。该展览以中国共产党在湖南革命历史为主线,选取新民主主义革命时期重要党史人物的代表性文物,通过“弄潮儿向涛头立”“百万工农齐踊跃”“遍地英雄下夕烟”“为有牺牲多壮志”四个单元,阐释文物的文化内涵和时代价值,解读文物背后的故事,展示“红色芳草”的革命精神和崇高品格,以达到教育人、感染人、激励人的目的。

王门艺事——王闿运和他的弟子们

王闿运(1833-1916),字壬秋,又字壬父,号湘绮,湖南湘潭人。咸丰三年举人,曾入肃顺、曾国藩等幕府,后主讲成都尊经书院,历任长沙思贤讲舍、衡州船山书院山长,主办南昌高等学堂,后授徒于湘绮楼中。清时授翰林院检讨,加侍讲衔。民初任清史馆馆长,兼任参议院参政。其在经学、文学、史学、教育、书法等多个领域卓有建树,著有《湘绮楼诗集、文集、日记》等。

王闿运乃一代名士,湘楚大儒。一生交游遍天下,传道授业,门生满天下,世称为泰斗,其力倡通经致用,培育经世英才。其中以名弟子杨度、杨庄、杨钧、夏寿田、齐白石、八指头陀、宋育仁、杨锐、廖平、胡元仪、易顺鼎、刘揆一、马宗霍等卓有成就。齐白石就曾题诗感怀恩师:“忆旧难逢话旧人,阿吾不复梦王门”。王门许多弟子在他生前身后,一直纵横捭阖于中国近现代的历史大舞台,近代湖湘人才辈出和巴蜀学术的复兴,与王闿运精心培养了大批人才是分不开的。

湖南省博物馆收藏明清以来的湖湘地方名人信札、书画等作品十分丰富,我们特从馆藏王闿运和他弟子们的相关作品中精心挑选了百余件(套)作为展品,其中有书画、印章、日记、手稿、信札等作品,这些墨迹大多是首次展出,十分稀少,弥足珍贵,不仅具有重要的文史价值,而且有着文人艺术的审美价值,不啻为一场学术交流和艺术欣赏的盛宴。我们希望通过本次展览,穿越时光隧道,从王门艺事中,窥知王闿运和他弟子们以天下为己任、经世致用的功业,梳理出晚清、民国时期湖湘地区独特的文化传承体系,进而推动学界、艺术界等对湖湘文化的研究。

“美俗于斯——木雕里的桃源印象”展是湖南省博物馆推出的集中反映湖湘地域文化的原创特别展览。本展览遴选200余件/套公私所藏桃源木雕精品,通过对其技艺特点、艺术风格及功能的视觉化展示,向观众呈现“木雕凿出的凹凸艺术”。桃源木雕以其鲜活的生命力、浓烈的生活印记、独特的礼仪与象征意义,集中反映了这一区域人群的审美旨趣、精神信仰和性格特征,既是承接了中华传统优秀文化的精粹,又为多元一体的文化格局增添了精彩的地方特色,丰富了和谐共生、美美与共的中华文明整体,彰显出桃源人民集体智慧的结晶和文化自信。让我们以桃源木雕为出发点,讲述历史悠久、人文鼎盛、民风质朴的桃源故事,管窥湖湘地域人民在创造美好生活过程中的勤劳智慧与精神追求。

Blossoms in Fairyland-Exhibition of the Taoyuan Embroidery in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China Period

Blossoms in Fairyland-Exhibition of the Taoyuan Embroidery in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China period is one of “Taoyuan Craftsmanship” series exhibition, which presenting the embroidery works. The series exhibition including embroidery and wood carving two parts is jointly hosted by the Hunan Museum and the Taoyuan County government. It is the first exhibition jointly held by the Hunan Museum and a local government. The series exhibition of “Taoyuan Craftsmanship” starts with the Taoyuan embroidery and wood carving in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China period, aiming to reflect the profound Huxiang regional civilization. It is the first work of “Hunan Regional Civilization Series” exhibition held by the Hunan museum.

Blossoms in Fairyland-Exhibition of the Taoyuan Embroidery in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China period carefully selected more than 170 pieces (sets) of Taoyuan embroideries from public and private collections in the Qing Dynasty and the Republic of China period. With the visual display of the subjects, patterns, skills, techniques and functions of embroideries, the exhibition aims to accurately interpret Taoyuan embroidery's exquisite skills, profound attainments, unique artistic characteristics and long-standing folk customs and rituals, interpret the unique aesthetic taste of the people in Taoyuan area, and glimpse the industrious wisdom and spiritual pursuit of the people in Hunan Area in the process of creating a better life, so as to help visitors to appreciate the unique charm of Hunan regional culture.

Exhibition of the Sanxitang Shiqubaoji Model Calligraphy

The Sanxitang Model Calligraphy was carved in 1747. Emperor Qianlong ordered officials including Liang Shizheng and Jiang Pu to carefully select from, copy and carve the famous calligraphy works of various dynasties in Shiqubaoji, which took them 7 years. The model calligraphy got its name because it contains Emperor Qianlong's three favorite calligraphy works – A Sunny Scene After a Quick Snow by Wang Xizhi, Mid-Autumn by Wang Xianzhi and Letter to Boyuan by Wang Xianzhi – all of them were collected in Sanxitang, the West Warm Room of Yangxin Hall. After the Sanxitang Model Calligraphy was engraved, Emperor Qianlong specially built Yuegulou Building in Beihai Park to store these stone carvings. He also entitled “Yan Yun Jin Tai” (calligraphy of different forms) and a seven-character poem, which shows how much they were treasured.

The Sanxitang Model Calligraphy contains works from the Wei and Jin dynasties to the end of the Ming Dynasty, including almost all the excellent calligraphy scripts in the Ming Dynasty, such as Tingyunguantie and Yugangzhaitie. Some of the original scripts have been destroyed or lost, such as Zhong Yao’s Jianjizhibiao, Wang Xianzhi’s Songlitie, and Zhao Mengfu’s Wanshanfu. Fortunately, with the Sanxitang Model Calligraphy, we can see the copies of them.

With numerous volumes, strict selections, excellent carving copies and large scales, the Sanxitang Model Calligraphy is of great historical, artistic and academic value. With a collection of works from 135 masters, 340 pieces of calligraphy, more than 200 prefaces and postscripts, over 1600 seals, 32 classifications, 495 pieces of stone carvings and more than 90,000 characters of inscriptions, it is one of the best calligraphy stone carvings.

Hunan Museum has a rich collection of paintings, calligraphy and inscriptions. At the beginning of the new year, we carefully selected the collection of the Sanxitang Model Calligraphy series and planned this exhibition for visitors, from whom valuable suggestions are welcomed.
