The Paintings of Wu Guanzhong

Wu Guanzhong(1919-2010), born in Yixing of Jiangsu province, is a renown painter and art educator. His practical and theoretical achievements have brought a broader prospective for the Chinese contemporary art. 

 During 1980s, Wu probed into a series of significant  aesthetic problems such as “abstract beauty”, “form beauty” and “form determining the content”, leaving abundant works and many sharply novel remarks. Artistic ideas proposed by him like “unbroken kite string” (kite refers to art works while string the reality where inspirations lie. He argued that works, despite of its forms, ought to emotionally revolve around certain themes), “cultural war” (cultural is also involved in global competition) and “form is nothing” （form should be appreciated in content, otherwise, it is of no meaning. His ideas have caught widespread attention, aroused discussion and controversy in artistic field, stimulating relentless passion in contemporary artists. Devoted wholeheartedly to blending together western oil paintings and traditional Chinese ink paintings, Wu created a lot of works, which, with original and ingenious designs, are perfect combination of tradition and modernity, imbued with his philosophy of life and enthusiasm for art. What's more, he donated for many times his works to National Art Museum Of China， Shanghai Art Museum, Zhejiang Art Museum, The National Gallery Singapore and Art Museum of Hong Kong etc, making his works accessible to more people. 

This exhibition co-organized by the Hunan Museum, Zhejiang Art Museum will display 80 pieces of works of Wu, all of which were once donated to Zhejiang Art Museum by him and his eldest son, Wu Keyu. We hope with great sincerity that these works will guide you to the wonderland of art.

风筝不断线——走进吴冠中的绘画世界

吴冠中（1919—2010），江苏宜兴人，著名画家、美术教育家。他的实践与理论成果为现代中国美术的发展开启了广阔视角，影响深远。
吴冠中先生勤于著述，立论鲜辣，于上世纪80年代前后讨论了关于抽象美、形式美、形式决定内容等一系列重大美学问题，提出了“风筝不断线”、“文化战争”、“笔墨等于零”等一系列艺术主张。在引起广泛关注、讨论、争议的同时，也激发了当代艺术从业者们的探索热情。他一生致力于融合西方油画与东方水墨画这两个完全不同的领域，所作彩墨画力图用传统水墨的绘画工具展现时代风尚，构思新颖，既有传统韵味，又有当代精神，每一件作品都透露着他的艺术理想与人生感悟，展现着他对艺术创作的执着追求！同时，吴冠中先生始终坚持强调艺术作品的社会普及性，并多次将自己的作品无偿捐赠给中国美术馆、上海美术馆、浙江美术馆、新加坡国家美术馆、香港艺术馆等机构收藏，充分体现了吴冠中先生回馈社会，无私奉献的高尚品格。
此次展览由湖南省博物馆与浙江美术馆联合主办，共展出浙江美术馆珍藏的吴冠中先生绘画作品80件，皆为吴冠中先生及其长子吴可雨先生前后两次向浙江美术馆捐赠的作品。希望这些融汇了中西文化的具有强烈艺术感染力和视觉冲击力的作品，能引导观众真正走进吴冠中的绘画世界！

Exhibition of Liu Hongzhou’s Paintings

The art exhibition of Liu Hongzhou’s works made its debut in Changsha, before which they had been displayed in the National Art Museum of China in 1993, Shi Jiazhuang Art Museum in 2016 and several foreign countries such as Japan and Thailand. With the gathering of nearly a hundred pieces created by Liu over the past few decades, this exhibition features five parts: printmaking, figure, landscape, bird and flower as well as hand scroll. Wondering in the exhibition, you may be blessed with profound inner peace and artistic beauty. 

Born in Fenghuang County (western part of Hunan Province), Liu has distinguished himself as an artist through continuous exploration into realms that have never been set foot on before. By blending together the seemingly incompatible fine and freehand brushwork, the essence of murals in Han and Tang Dynasty as well as that of Western works， he created volumes of flower and bird—themed paintings, ushering a new world where the traditional art encounters with the passionate modern colors. His early life experience and painstaking study of different skills， together with his unique tentacle for art, helped to shape the vast landscape as well as the exquisite figures in his works，as was once remarked by Huang Yongyu，a renowned artist in China：“One can tell that his works share a lot with his personality: modesty, serenity，abundance and precision. Plainly and fully revealing the traditional techniques and his modern awareness, theseworks are readily accessible and quite respectable. ”

欢无极——杨福音的绘画艺术

杨福音的中国画独具匠心，自成一格。画面意蕴有似曾相识的古风，但他的表现却又似前无古者。其笔墨酣畅饱满，无拘无束，看似随意，实际已进入一种神形合一收放自如的状态。从这一幅幅画看过去，你会极其强烈感受到中国艺术家一脉相承的活泼生命力以及内敛的艺术张力。

杨福音认为：中国画创新的结果应该是更像中国画，创新应更加接近中国画的原核、生命、语言，而不是离开中国画。

“杨福音画作格高韵远，无俗媚气，是我心仪的新文人画。我尤喜其书写自己的警句、妙语，满纸都是思想感情，确实能动人心魄”这是著名文化学者钟叔河读杨福音书画的感受。

“意淡言疏情厚细美”这是中国国家画院研究员、凤凰卫视高级策划、著名文化学者王鲁湘通过对杨福音绘画艺术深入研究后的学术评论。他说：“杨福音真的是在美术史上的凤毛麟角，诚可敬也！” 中国美术家协会理论委员会主任、中央美术学院教授邵大箴说道：“正是由于杨福音有深厚的传统精神，他才能走进去再走出来，所以他画得和传统不一样，但是有传统的精深。他能了解西方现代艺术，但是他的艺术主要来自于传统，来自于民间艺术，来自于生活。”

评论家曾用“精微雅致”四个字来说杨福音绘画的特点。精微雅致，就是中国极品文人那种讲究，这种讲究，曾经造就了中华美学出尘脱俗的风范。

湖南美术出版社出版的《福音画语》与画展同步首发。

芥舟楫痕——刘鸿洲画展

在骄阳似火、鸟语蝉鸣的季节， 湖南省博物馆新馆迎来了著名艺术家刘鸿洲的个人作品展，这也是刘鸿洲先生继1993年在中国美术馆、2016年石家庄美术馆举办个展，应邀在日本、泰国等地参展后，在长沙的一次回顾展。本次展览作品分为版画、人物、山水、花鸟、手卷五个部分，共计近百幅。

刘鸿洲出生于湘西凤凰，上世纪90年代以来，艺术作品善于发现和挖掘前人未曾触及的表现空间，采用工笔和写意相结合的手法，大胆吸收汉唐壁画和西方色彩的营养，从湘西的生活中创新，创作出一大批花鸟画，厚重大气，强烈辉煌，既见传统笔墨情趣，又见现代色彩魅力，构成刘鸿洲花鸟画艺术的神韵，他在绘画语言的探索方面，形成了自己的风格。早年的生活经历，对民族美术的了解，多年潜心研究艺术理论，刻木板，画插画，到各处游学，铸就了刘鸿洲笔下的山水大气磅礴，人物神韵细腻。就如黄永玉先生所说：“他的艺事和他的为人经历学识一样: 谦和、沉着、丰富、精密，既有饱满的传统技巧，又有宽和从容的现代意识，不矫揉造作，不故弄玄虚。抒张有致，开合从容，让人深感亲近又肃然起敬。”这次展览的作品，就是艺术家几十年来创新成果的集中呈现。

The paintings of Huang Dingchu

Born in Yongfeng town, Shuangfeng county of Hunan province, Huang Dingchu (1943—2016) had multiple titles: member of the China Artists Association and China Printmaking Artists Association, consultant of Chinese Painting Art Committee of Hunan Artists Association, art editor for Xiangjiang Literature (once a monthly publication in Hunan) in 1974, Deputy Secretary General of Hunan Artists Association in 1984 and landscape painter of Hunan Painting and Calligraphy Research Institute in 1990. 
  
Once working on figure printmaking in his early years, Huang later turned to landscape painting and made great achievements. “I didn’t attend art school or receive professional instructions. Deep love of my hometown and beautiful things is my only career motivation. For all hardships encountered these years, my passion never faded in the least.” From the vast Dongting Lake to the charming Xiufeng Mountain, natural scenery of Hunan was a giant magnet to him. Eventually, those diverse landscapes with full expression can be found in his paintings, which were spiritually self-revealing as well as an ode to artistic styles of masters (including ancient ones such as Dong Yuan, Ju Ran, Huang Gongwang Wang Meng and modern ones like Huang Binhong). “Scenery from without, beauty from within; here and there my stroke goes, just the way the mountain runs.” Far beyond a faithful reproduction of outside world, his paintings, with skillful, dynamic brushwork and ingenuous yet connotation-loaded images, are imbued with poetic beauty of traditional Chinese ink painting and profound culture of Hunan area.  

According to his will, Huang’s family donated 40 of his works to Hunan Museum. Therefore, we organized this special exhibition to express our deep gratitude for their generosity as well as their contribution to the spread and inheritance of Hunan local culture, hoping the public will gain aesthetic pleasure from the great works.

兴来笔下生烟霞——黄定初绘画作品暨捐赠作品展

黄定初（1943——2016），湖南省双峰县永丰镇人。中国美术家协会会员，中国版画家协会会员，湖南美协中国画艺委会顾问,1974年任《湘江文学》美术编辑，1984年任湖南美术家协会副秘书长，1990年调至湖南书画研究院为专职山水画家。
黄定初先生早年曾从事人物版画创作，后专攻山水画并取得很高成就。“我没有上过艺术院校，也没有师门，凭着对故乡的深情、对美的热爱，干起了专业。年复一年，苦乐参半，甘心爱之”。从浩浩荡荡的洞庭湖到俊俏坚韧的秀峰山，湘楚大地上几乎都留下了黄定初先生的游览及写生足迹；外师造化，中得心源，故乡的美景与古朴的乡情激发了黄定初先生的创作灵感，饱含湘楚山水灵气的笔墨语言特征也由此生发出来。“画可营造，境由心生，是吾写山写水之本；笔墨随山而转，是吾作画之法”，在表达自我的同时，董源、巨然、黄公望、王蒙等古贤及黄宾虹等近现代大师的笔意也一并融入其画作。黄定初先生的山水作品，已不止于忠实再现客观物象，灵动的笔墨与图案化的山水云彩浑然一体，充分表现了传统绘画的笔墨意趣，并将湖湘文脉的深厚底蕴注入其中。

黄定初先生家属根据先生生前意愿，向湖南省博物馆捐赠40件黄定初先生书画作品。此举丰富了湖南省博物馆关于湘籍书画名家的收藏，对于湖南的书画传承亦具有深远的意义。因此，我馆特举办“黄定初绘画作品暨捐赠作品展”，以感谢黄定初先生家属的义举，同时也回馈社会，希望公众能借此领略先生绘画的魅力，感受山水画的趣味。

“半隐半醉瘦影斜，寒灯对月静煮茶。无限天书倚炉看，兴来笔下生烟霞”。让我们伴随着先生一生沉迷读书作画的兴致走进他的绘画世界。
